Castro, la capital de la provincia de Chiloé, se caracteriza por ser una de las ciudades más antiguas de Chile, donde su geografía de bordes y canales dictó una forma única de habitar. El Barrio Gamboa, ubicado en el acceso sur de la ciudad, representa la expresión más pura de esta arquitectura vernácula: los palafitos.
Originalmente, estas estructuras surgieron como una respuesta a la falta de espacio terrestre y a la necesidad de familias de pescadores y obreros de estar conectados directamente con el mar para sus faenas diarias. Construidos sobre pilotes de maderas nativas como el Luma y el Ciprés de las Guaitecas, los palafitos de Gamboa han resistido durante décadas el embate del clima y los cambios sociales, convirtiéndose en un testimonio de la carpintería de ribera y la resiliencia local.

Tras el terremoto y maremoto de 1960, muchas de estas zonas desaparecieron, quedando Gamboa como uno de los pocos conjuntos que preservó este sistema constructivo tradicional. Hoy, este barrio vive un proceso de transformación donde el turismo busca poner en valor lo auténtico. Nuestra propuesta en El Astillero, es precisamente esa: honrar esta memoria histórica, rescatando la materialidad original y el diseño interior para que usted pueda vivir la experiencia de habitar sobre las mareas, tal como se ha hecho en este rincón de Castro por generaciones.
